Strippers, About Town, 1961

A photo essay for the July 1961 issue of About Town magazine, depicting a day in the life of a stripper in 1960s London. Focusing not on their professional activity, Donovan instead followed two women as they went about the mundane activities of daily life. The series of images powerfully evoke a sense of the deprivation and isolation faced by poorly paid, marginal workers, in a grey and gritty, early 60s London still very much in the shadow of post-war austerity.
